Conversation with 21st Century Leader Anne Driscoll

For the first installment of the "Conversations with 21st Century Leaders" series, I interviewed Anne Driscoll. For more information about Anne, visit the post on the LinkedIn Pulse to read her bio and find her LinkedIn profile.

The "Conversations with 21st Century Leaders" series is intended to help students in leadership courses at Northwestern University gain a real-world understanding of the complex issues today’s leaders face. The interview consists of four parts and you can watch all of them on embedded the YouTube playlist below. The videos are split by topic into four sections: Leadership and Personal Development, Cultural Connections, Getting to Know You Questions (submitted by students in my course), and a concluding Wrap Up.

Please watch the interview and share your thoughts in the comments section.

  1. Excellent interview. I especially like the dialogue on pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. Being comfortable, being uncomfortable. The example of an introvert coping with anxiety associated with sharing thoughts and feelings was on point. Taking the first step is hard but can be a game-changer. Courage overcomes a lot discomfort, and the output can produce Confidence!

  2. This was a great interview. I truly enjoyed hearing about various characteristics that make a great leader. Also understanding that a great leader doesn’t just show up to work every day, s/he also is involved in the community and tries to improve the areas that surround him/her. That leader’s resume goes beyond what they do from 9 – 5:00.

I also appreciated Ms. Driscoll’s perspective on employee recognition. It’s not always about what their paycheck states, but also the ability to be flexible and show appreciation for them. I read an article on LinkedIn today about how important he feels employee recognition is also (unfortunately I can’t find the link now).

It was also interesting to hear that it helps when a leader has lived abroad and been exposed to other cultures. It helps to make him/her a more well-rounded person.

    Thank you, Anne!

  3. (391-16SP08) This was an informative interview and the reason is to really understand what people look for in a leadership role. Often time, we see leaders as a group of people that do not care or are very inclusive. However, based on Anne's interview they look for qualities such as humility and a controlled ego. I also feel as employee recognition is important as it really helps empower the work force

  4. Anne is a dynamic woman who exemplifies the qualities of a level 5 leader, and who is very passionate about making sure that people are at the core of her understanding of the value that is truly important in an organization. She is one of few...that seems to get the complexity of being a powerful leader with having the balance of understanding that charisma alone cannot get the organization aligned. She also is a champion for diversity and inclusion and seems to really get it! To understand that there are reall issues and concerns of both women and people of color, and that today's leaders need to be able to understand how to balance the complexity of focusing on the work, along with focusing on the culture and how people feel valued. I truly enjoyed both the video and her in class experience.
