Conversation with 21st Century Leader Sharon Bussell

For the third installment of the "Conversations with 21st Century Leaders" series, I interviewed Sharon Bussell. For more information about Sharon, visit the post on the LinkedIn Pulse to read her bio and find her LinkedIn profile.

The "Conversations with 21st Century Leaders" series is intended to help students in leadership courses at Northwestern University gain a real-world understanding of the complex issues today’s leaders face. The interview consists of four parts and you can watch all of them on embedded the YouTube playlist below. The videos are split by topic into four sections: Leadership and Personal Development, Cultural Connections, Getting to Know You Questions (submitted by students in my course), and a concluding Wrap Up. A graphical representation of the ARCA model is also provided.

Please watch the interview and share your thoughts in the comments section.

  1. As a follow-up to the post, below you will find a condensed overview of the components and application of the ARCA Model as Sharon and I discussed it.

ARCA describes what happens when we experience stress and how to effectively work with that natural process. Developed as a psychotherapeutic tool and trademarked as a conflict resolution paradigm, ARCA teaches how to identify and use our responses to stress in a conscious and thoughtful way.

    3 Steps before applying ARCA

Identify when you are feeling under stress and locate where you feel it in your body.
Learn to observe your react loop: Anxiety (what you feel under stress)—Reaction (Fight/Flight)—Culprit (who is to Blame)—A
When you are able, stop yourself when you get to the ACTION part of your react loop. ACTION is any behavior, thought, feeling, belief, or conclusion that flows directly from your react loop.

Once you are able to stop yourself from engaging in your react loop, you are ready to enter the ARCA paradigm. These steps begin with AWARENESS and move into RESPONSIBILITY, followed by CHOICE.

Take into account that you may “drop” back into the react loop at any time during this process. If/when that happens, repeat steps 1-3 as necessary to return to ARCA.

After completing the first three parts of ARCA, you will become able to ACT from a position of thoughtful awareness. This does not mean your ACTION will be devoid of emotion; rather you will be able to ACT from personal conviction instead of a personalized reaction.
